UTE refer our readers to th? annual statement of tbe ^lltna Insurance Company, of Hartford, wh ’’h wi.'l be found in another column, '('his success- fu. iu.-ititution was incorporated by the Legislature of i\iHieinicut in 18U>, with a perpetual charter. Its r,.\pitft’i is $500,000, and its accumulations exceed xsiio.iiOO more, making its entire assets ever ^i^'OO,- nivested as detailed in the statement referred to These results in.licate that during the period of nearly t 'fty years since its organization, (without a single L'hange of its chief officer,) its business has been con- Juotcd with judgment and prudence. It has been thus far successful in an eminent degree, discharging. H3 we are informed, all its obligations by the payment of abi'ut ten uiHion dolLirt for losses, without asking a day's delay in any instance. It has had but little lit igation, notwithstanding the immense number of trans actions made. In order to attain as mucli ccrtuintij as possible in snch a business as insurance, it has been the practice of the Company, for several years, at great labor, carefully to classify and arrange their risks into about fifty distinct classes, so as to ascertain the amount insured on each class, the amount of pre miums received thereon, and the amount of losses up on each. This classiticatiou. extending over a long period, and covering property to a very large amount, fur nishes reliable data, and presents a sound, substantial basis of actual experience, upon which to conduct its j business. Insurance is not a matter of luck or chance, i a- many suppose; its hazards are ascertainable, and j its principles capable of being reduced to a system, the prMCt'cal working and result.s of which are as certain | as that of any other business. The -Etna Company, I by adhering rigidly to its system, and placing its busi- ! ness uj .'U a healthy basis, has obtaiue i the ci-ntidence | of the community to an extent surpassed by no other Company in the U. States, and has increased its busi ness and its income from year to year with a steady gf wth. (_)ne great source of its security is the wide d;3tributiou of its risks—a policy which it pursues with great strictness—limiting the amount to be cov ered in each locality. By this course it has passed, with C'lmparative impunity, through some of the most sweeping and destructive tires, which have swallowed up .'her companies less cautious in their bu.siness. It is 6 system like this, based upon experience, which gives btnbiiity ani soundness to a company, and to the as- SurfJ contidence and .-ouritv.—lialtim'jrn 1‘ijtriot. .ET.\.i L\siRA.\ii; mwm, HARTl'OUn, C()N.\.
